  43. To install and run Borland C++Builder, you must meet the
  44. following minimum system requirements:
  45.  
  46. * 16 MB RAM (24 MB recommended)
  47. * 80486 processor or better
  48. * Windows 95 or Windows NT (3.51 or 4.0)
  49. * 80 to 175 MB of free hard disk space (195 MB for
  50.   the Client/Server Suite), subject to the 
  51.   installation options you choose and cluster
  52.   size.

  55. B. Compact Installation
  56. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  57. A minimum installation of Borland C++Builder includes Borland
  58. C++Builder, as well as the Borland Database Engine, and is
  59. called the "Compact" install by the installation program. It
  60. does not include the Database Desktop, Local InterBase, or SQL
  61. Links.  A compact installation of Borland C++Builder will take
  62. approximately 80 MB of hard disk space.  To perform a compact
  63. installation, choose the "Compact" installation option on the
  64. installation options page.

  67. C. Full Installation
  68. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  69. A full installation of C++Builder includes all the tools
  70. available, the Windows-hosted IDE, and allows development for
  71. 32-bit Windows.  This is called the "Full" install by the
  72. installation program, and requires approximately 125 MB of hard
  73. disk space.

  76. D. Installation Conflicts
  77. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  78. To avoid potential conflicts when Setup installs system files,
  79. we recommend that you close down all other running applications
  80. before installing Borland C++Builder.  To get a listing of
  81. applications running on your machine, either:
  82.  
  83. - Under Windows 95:
  84.   Look at the taskbar on which the Start button is located. 
  85.   OR
  86.   Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (once) and look at your Close Program
  87.   list (click Cancel to exit the list).
  88.  
  89. - Under Windows NT 4.0:
  90.   Look at the taskbar on which the Start button is located. 
  91.   OR
  92.   Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (once), and choose Task Manager to 
  93.   see the list of programs running on your system 
  94.   (Choose File|Exit Task Manager to exit the list).

  96. - Under Windows NT 3.51:
  97.   Double-click on the background (behind Program Manager).
  98.   This brings up the Task List (click Cancel to exit
  99.   the list).

  102. E.  Installing C++Builder, Interbase, and InstallShield Express
  103. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  104. Not all of the listed products below are available in all
  105. versions of Borland C++Builder.  Listed below are all the
  106. relevant paths to the various setup programs, and the packages
  107. that each product is included in.
  108.  
  109. 1) Borland C++Builder (all packages)
  110.    To install Borland C++Builder from the CD, 
  111.    run \SETUP\CBUILDER\SETUP.EXE
  112.  
  113. 2) Local InterBase (Client/Server and Professional packages only)
  114.    To install Local InterBase, 
  115.    run \SETUP\LOCALIB\DISK1\SETUP.EXE
  116.  
  117. 3) InterBase Server (Client/Server package only)
  118.    To install the InterBase Server, 
  119.    run \SETUP\SERVERIB\DISK1\SETUP.EXE
  120.  
  121. 4) InstallShield Espress (Client/Server and Professional
  122.    packages only)
  123.    To install InstallShield Express,
  124.    run \SETUP\ISX\SETUP.EXE

  130. A. Known Installation Issues
  131. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  132. 1.  Installation sometimes reports misleading "out of disk
  133.     space" error message.
  134.  
  135.     If you install Borland C++Builder on a drive other than
  136.     the drive on which Windows resides, check to be sure that
  137.     you have more than 32 MB of disk space free on your Windows
  138.     drive (usually C:).  Otherwise, it is possible that the
  139.     installation program will report that you have run out of
  140.     disk space.  This usually does not mean that you ran out of
  141.     space on the drive on which you are installing Borland
  142.     C++Builder.  It usually means that you ran out of space on
  143.     the Windows drive, because C++Builder must install several
  144.     files into the Windows directory structure.
  145.  
  146.     Also note:  If you install separate components on different
  147.     drives on your machine, the disk space reported per drive
  148.     and for each component may be incorrect.  You should
  149.     manually ensure that you have enough disk space for each
  150.     component before attempting to install it.
  151.  
  152. 2.  Install program unable to create groups with certain
  153.     characters.
  154.  
  155.     In the installation, when you get to the screen where you
  156.     can specify the name of the program group you want to be
  157.     created, you cannot include parenthesis '(' and ')' or
  158.     commas ',' in the group name.
  159.  
  160. 3.  Problems using Symantec's Norton Navigator.
  161.  
  162.     If you have Symantec's Norton Desktop for Windows 95
  163.     installed and you launch \SETUP.EXE from the Navigator, you
  164.     will see the Borland C++Builder installation begin, but
  165.     instead of the installation displaying on the desktop, it
  166.     will be viewable through the main view only.  The
  167.     installation is still running, but it is just not visible
  168.     on the desktop.

  170. 4.  Cannot install while uninstall running.
  171.  
  172.     If you attempt to run \SETUP.EXE while a copy of the
  173.     uninstall program is running, you will receive errors.
  174.     DO NOT run the installation program while the uninstall is
  175.     running.  If you're not sure if the uninstall is running,
  176.     follow the instructions in Section 0 D to determine what
  177.     is running on your machine before running \SETUP.EXE.

  180. B. Hard Drive Installation
  181. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  182. Installing from a CD-ROM may cause synchronization difficulties
  183. between various pieces of hardware or certain hardware drivers.
  184. If you suspect that your CD-ROM drive or your CD-ROM driver
  185. might be at fault, you can attempt a hard drive installation.
  186.  
  187. To begin, copy the entire setup directory into a temporary
  188. directory on your C:\ drive. The setup directory contains all
  189. the files needed for the installation.  Once these have been
  190. successfully copied, restart your machine in SAFE MODE or VGA
  191. MODE by following the appropriate instructions in section 2 of
  192. this document, and then attempt to install the product.

  194. When running the install, remember to change the SOURCE 
  195. directory so that it points to the temporary directory.

  198. C. Files Available on the CD
  199. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  200. Most of the files installed in your target directory by the 
  201. SETUP.EXE program are on the distribution CD in the CBUILDER 
  202. directory. You must use SETUP.EXE to install C++Builder, but 
  203. you can copy files from this directory tree on the CD if any 
  204. files are lost or damaged during or after installation.
